Renowned Baltimore-based electronic musician, composer and film scorer Dan Deacon is coming to Seoul during his Asian tour to kick off Groove Korea’s music showcase, Groove On. The show starts at 11 p.m. on Nov. 28 at Club FF in Hongdae.
While being classically trained and having dabbled in movie scores, Deacon is known for the addictive melodic lines, distorted samples and acoustic textures that characterize his music. Since 2003 he’s released eight electronic dance music albums. His major break came with his first commercially distributed (third overall) full-length album, “Spiderman of the Rings,” which was named one of the 25 best records of 2007 by Pitchfork Media. Following that, his album “Bromst” was also well received in the indie scene, ranking No. 46 on Pitchfork’s Best Albums of 2009.
In his live sets, his songs build slowly, adding layers that rise and crest and recede and crest again until they break into a euphoric wave of synthesizers, drums and rippling vocals. Expect flashing lights, lots of noise and an unusual pull toward the dance floor.

Deacon’s shows are known for his efforts to break down the barrier between performer and audience. As evidenced in his past performances in Seoul and Busan in 2012, there’s no standing quietly at the back of the room or staring up at the musician on stage. The audience is as much a part of the show as he is.
Deacon is also a founding member of the Wham City art collective, through which Deacon has an app for augmenting the experience at his shows with social media. Deacon’s app, powered by Wham City Lights, responds to ultrasonic tones to light up the screens of audience members’ phones, turning them into a synchronized light show.
“Having lots of people interacting together, making something on the spot, creating something together and shifting the focus from stage to audience to individual to group opens up a lot of possibilities for new things that would be impossible otherwise,” he says.
While having spent this past spring and summer touring North America with Arcade Fire and putting on his own shows, Deacon has also managed to record a new album, which has just entered the mixing stage. He says it will be a “return to synthetic sounds” with a lot of the songs “fixed on one chord” and his vocals sounding “much more ‘natural,’ or at least discernible, on this record.”
Organized in cooperation with My Same Ink, “Groove On with Dan Deacon” will be opened by local electronic rock band Love X Stereo before the electronic music guru takes the stage.

미국 발티모어 출신 일렉트로닉 뮤지션 댄 디컨이 아시아 투어차 내한을 하여 그루브 코리아의 음악 쇼케이스 Groove On에서 함께하게 됐다. 공연은 11월 28일 밤 11시에 홍대 크럽 FF에서 한다.
댄 디컨은 클래식 음악 교육을 받아왔으며 영화 OST 작곡하는 일을 했었지만, 요즘은 그의 음악의 중독적인 멜로디, 샘플의 디스토션과 어쿠스틱 선율의 조화로 알려져 있다. 2003년에 활동을 시작하면서 총 8장의 앨범을 만들었으며 첫 공식 발매 앨범인 ‘Spiderman of the Rings’로 호평을 받으며 관심을 끌었다. 인디/언더그라운드 음악 비평/뉴스 사이트 Pitchfork Media에서 2007년 탑50 앨범 랭킹에도 24위를 차지하는 등 실적을 냈다. 그의 후속 앨범 ‘Bromst’ 또한 2009년에 46위를 차지하면서 지속적으로 인디씬의 찬사를 받아왔다.
댄 디컨을 거론하면 그의 라이브 공연이 빠질 수 없다. 그의 음악은 처음엔 찬찬히 선율의 층이 강약을 반복하며 싸인다. 그러다가 신스, 드럼, 그리고 파문처럼 번지는 보컬이 파도가 되어 온 공연장이 요동을 치게 한다. 반짝이는 불빛과 신나는 음악이 묘하게 댄스 플로어로 이끌 것이다.
디컨의 공연은 뮤지션과 관객 사이의 장벽이 허물어지는 것이 특징이다. 2012년에 내한을 하여 서울과 부산에서 공연했을 적에 볼 수 있었듯이, 공연장 뒤쪽에 조용히 지켜보기만 하는 법이 없다. 디컨에게는 관객도 자기의 공연의 일원이 된다.
그는 그가 새운 Wham City 예술 공동 사업체에서 소셜 미디어를 통해 공연 경험을 향상시키는 스마트폰 앱을 개발하였다. 이 앱을 공연중에 켜게 되면 음악속의 초음파 음조에 반응하여 관객들의 폰 화면이 반짝거리며 또 하나의 라이트 쇼가 된다.
“많은 사람들이 함께 소통하게끔 하는 것, 현장에서 즉흥적으로 무엇을 만들어내는 것, 함께 무엇을 만듦으로써 초점을 무대에서 관객으로 개인에서 단체로 옮기는 것이 수없이 많은 가능성을 열어줘요.” 라고 그는 말했다.
지난 봄 여름간 Arcade Fire 와 북미 투어 및 그의 단독 공연을 하면서도 그는 다음 앨범 녹음 작업을 지속적으로 해왔다. 이제는 믹싱 단계에 들었다. 그가 말하기를, 발매를 앞두고 있는 앨범은 “인조음향으로 돌아갈 것”이라며 여러 곡은 “단 한 개의 화음에 고정이 될 것”이고 그의 보컬은 “더욱더 ‘내추럴’하게, 적어도 식별 가능할 것”이라고 하였다.
My Same Ink와 공동 주최될 것이며 “Groove On with Dan Deacon”의 주인공이 무대에 오르기 전 개막은 일렉트로닉 락 밴드 Love X Stereo가 맡게 될 것이다.
